By 1933, upon Charles Alden’s retirement, operations were moved to Brockton, Massachusetts and merged with the Old Colony factory. The Great Depression affected numerous shoe companies in New England. Although demand for manufacturing increased during World War II, by the late 1940s new consumer demands spurred the search for manufacturing sectors offering lower labor costs. Attrition would take hold over the remainder of the century as manufacturers moved farther and farther away in search of lower-cost labor and materials to meet the insatiable demand in the USA for low-cost, mass-market consumer footwear.
